Funding of 135 Million Yuan! Professors Sha Aimin and Chen Jianxun from Our College Lead Two National Key R&D Program Projects

Time:September 20, 2025

Recently, two National Key R&D Program projects led by Professor Sha Aimin and Professor Chen Jianxun from our college have been approved, with total funding of 90 million yuan and 45 million yuan respectively.

Project 1: "Self-Organizing Operation Technology for Autonomous Road Traffic Systems"
Professor Sha Aimin leads the National Key R&D Program project titled "Self-Organizing Operation Technology for Autonomous Road Traffic Systems," under the key special project of Transportation Equipment and Intelligent Transportation Technology. With total funding of 90 million yuan, this project highlights Chang'an University's growing academic prowess in the field of intelligent transportation.

Professor Sha’s team addresses the construction needs of a new generation of autonomous road traffic systems capable of self-perception, self-updating, self-decision-making, self-adaptation, self-evolution, and collaborative interoperability. Focusing on critical research gaps—such as the behavioral characteristics of all road traffic elements, multi-agent coordination, multi-system coupling, and the efficient matching of mixed traffic flows at varying autonomy levels with road capacity resources—the project aims to develop a self-organizing operational technology framework adaptable to diverse autonomy levels. This will provide technical support for enhancing the overall operational efficiency of road traffic systems.

The project, led by Chang'an University, brings together renowned institutions including the Traffic Management Science Research Institute of the Ministry of Public Security, Tsinghua University, Tongji University, Sun Yat-sen University, Tsinghua Shenzhen International Graduate School, Shenzhen Urban Transport Planning Center Co., Ltd., Shenzhen Expressway Group Co., Ltd., BYD Company Limited, and Zhejiang Dahua Technology Co., Ltd. Its successful implementation is expected to advance China’s road traffic system intelligence to higher levels of autonomy, reduce dependency on developed countries for smart transportation development, achieve internationally leading standards, and strongly support China’s strategy of building a strong transportation nation.

Project 2: "Key Technologies for Enhancing Resilience in Construction and Maintenance of Ultra-Long Highway Tunnels in Plateau Glacier Regions"

Professor Chen Jianxun leads the National Key R&D Program project titled "Key Technologies for Enhancing Resilience in Construction and Maintenance of Ultra-Long Highway Tunnels in Plateau Glacier Regions," under the key special project of Transportation Infrastructure. With total funding of 45 million yuan, this project underscores Chang'an University’s advancing expertise in the construction and maintenance of transportation infrastructure in challenging environments.

Professor Chen’s team tackles the high-risk challenges of constructing and maintaining ultra-long highway tunnels in plateau glacier regions. The project aims to enhance resilience in these tunnels by establishing assessment theories and methods, developing intelligent reconstruction techniques for unfavorable geological conditions and risk identification technologies, innovating efficient disaster prevention and resilience enhancement strategies for geological and freeze-thaw hazards, and proposing tunnel-environment protection resilience technologies for ecologically sensitive glacier areas. The outcome will be a comprehensive resilience enhancement framework for tunnel construction and maintenance in plateau glacier regions, providing a solid theoretical and technical foundation to address these complex challenges.

The project, led by Chang'an University, collaborates with prestigious institutions such as Shandong University, Southwest Jiaotong University, Shandong Jiaotong University, Xinjiang Transportation Planning Survey and Design Institute Co., Ltd., China University of Petroleum (East China), and Northeastern University. Its implementation will significantly improve disaster prevention and mitigation capabilities for major national transportation infrastructure in plateau glacier areas. The results are anticipated to reach internationally leading standards, supporting national strategies such as "New Quality Productivity," "Transportation Power," and "Carbon Peak and Neutrality," while markedly elevating the construction and operational maintenance levels of ultra-long highway tunnels in these regions and serving as a model for the transportation infrastructure sector.
